Join us for an entertaining and educational evening with special guest Mikkel Aaland. Aaland will share lessons from his 35-year professional career as well as highlight his latest photographic project, “The River in Our Backyard”. He’ll also demonstrate his personal workflow using the latest version of Adobe Lightroom, version 4, and Photoshop. “One of the biggest challenges facing photographers today,” explains Aaland, “besides ever lowering revenue streams, is managing an extensive image collection and creating an efficient workflow that takes you from camera to computer to a final destination, be it a print, a book, or the web.”
But workflow isn’t everything, “Quality very much counts,” says Aaland. “And that means knowing how to pull the levers and push the buttons that squeeze out the very best from an image file.” Workflow and quality. Instruction with inspiration. We are in for a great evening!

They will be discussing overall brand image and how they tie into the design and flow of a photographers web presence. They will then discuss different marketing techniques including classic advertising, SEO, social media, referrals, etc. The overall emphasis is going to be on establishing a strong online presence for your photography business.

We actually fell into wedding photography as a direct result of the financial crisis. We had all quit our jobs at Ernst and Young to start up a web startup. We had nearly 1 million dollars in funding. Two weeks after we quit, the financial crisis hit and our funding was pulled. We closed down our office, let our people go and then tried to figure out what to do with our lives. We started out doing web design in early 2008 and then after attending WPPI in February of that year, we decided that we should get into photography. We apprenticed under John Solano and Brian Marcus during 2008. We shot our first wedding under Lin and Jirsa Photography in July of 2008. In our first year, we shot over 60 events for LJP. Presently, our studio does around 100 weddings per year. We try to keep our workload fairly light since we also run SLR Lounge and UNDFIND. As far as awards and accomplishments, we are fairly lazy, so we don’t ever submit to publications/competitions, haha! However, through our coordinator’s and vendor’s efforts we have been published over 30 times in magazines, prominent blogs and newspapers including New York Times, Ceremony, The Knot, etc.

If you would’ve told me two months ago that my already jammed packed life would get even busier, I would’ve laughed at you, and then crawled into the nearest cave (ok, maybe not a cave, since they are dirty and have bugs in them, but somewhere dark, clean, smells pretty and with a TV at least) and hid.

But it did.

So much so that I don’t even have the time to look at this blog, which accounts for my lack of posts lately. So, here’s a quick one. I’m going to *try* to be more purposeful and post regularly again, but no promises…there’s not always Internet connection in the cave.

Today’s quick post, highlights my new favorite iPhone app. It’s called Camera Awesome (by one of my FAVORITE companies, SmugMug) and it really is awesome. I dumped my iPhone camera app and solely use this now. I haven’t had time to figure out all the cool features yet, but check out the sharpness on this thing!
