Matthew Saville’s slideshow is titled “The four key elements that make up a beautiful portrait.” It will focus on four critical aspects in portrait images, and what can either make or break an artistic photograph. Matt will describe the personal thought process he uses when shooting and critiquing his own work, which should help both beginning and advanced photographers improve their portraiture in a dramatic way.

Matt first learned photography on film, and currently shoots both digital and film on both Nikon and Canon cameras. He focuses equally on the artistic and technical aspects of image making, and critiques his own portfolio regularly to spark improvement.

Matt has been a SmugMug user for seven years, shooting a wide variety of jobs from weddings to children’s theater. He is a co-leader of the SoCal Photog Shootout group, and a contributing member of the [b] school.

January OC SmugMug User Group (A Recap)

I’ll admit, I was very excited but a little nervous for this months SmugMug User Group Meeting. My own wedding photographer, Cean Orrett of CeanOne Photography was coming to speak and although I know that he is a very successful photographer and an amazing talent, I had no idea if he possessed the ability to speak in front of a group of people.

I don’t know what I was nervous about, because Cean rocked the meeting. Some of the reviews on our Meet-Up Page:

“An inspiring success story by a humble entrepreneur.” ~Mark Dobbs (Who also brought amazingly yummy -vegetarian friendly- snacks!)

“This is the best Meet-up group I have personally attended and will continue to attend.” ~ Paul Rupp

“This was my 1st OC meet-up. Hanssie was a sweetheart, and Cean Orrett was so inspiring!” ~Faith Cherisse (Ok, ok, I added this one because it mentioned me)

Instead of lecturing, THANK GOD –I have a short attention span – Cean made it more of a Q & A session. He fielded questions about getting started, dealing with various budgets, building relationships, his 18 year journey to success, and much more. It struck me as I sat and listened to my mentor how his advice was sometimes so different from the advice I’d had heard from various workshops of the years I’ve been in business. Cean’s humble approach to the photography business was a stark contrast to some of the arrogance I’d seen and heard from others in this industry. And Cean has 18 years of success (and failures) to back him up.

He’s gearing up for his first workshop next month and the grand opening of his second studio in Los Angeles this month. Thanks Cean for being open and honest. You’re a ROCKSTAR!

Photos from the Smug, some by me, some by Matthew Saville.

Thanks to the people that came and extra special love to those that brought yummy snacks (COOKIES!!).
