Although I love fashion, love flipping through the pages of Vogue, Glamour and W Magazines, love shopping and looking at what the stars are wearing, I never really GOT high fashion. Pink bunnies and guys in tutus always seemed a bit out there for me and I always wondered why people would actually wear some of the outfits from the pages of Vogue. Beside looking hungry, the models–with asymmetrical caps and pieces of fabric which was strategically placed over body parts looked bored and uncomfortable. But really, would I ever wear makeup that made my eyebrows have a light blue tint (this months Vogue) or paper Abe Lincoln-esque hats with crocheted shawls (this month’s W)? Probably not.
Since becoming a photographer, I kinda totally get it. It’s fun. It’s creative and though I’ll never wear a pink tutu or a lime feather mask to the grocery store, finding a toned down version of this season’s style will be straight from the pages of the latest fashion magazine that is strewn around my house. And if I have to photograph it, well, the crazier and more innovate the better. Bring on the feathers, bunnies and unicycles.
As a wedding photographer, I don’t usually encounter pink tutus or bunnies and unicycles, but my wedding photography always has a bit of a fashion flair to them. Not only do shoots like these allow me to play but I’m also experimenting, looking for new ideas for posing a bride or bridesmaids–ways to incorporate a little “Vogue” at the wedding. So, if any of you potential brides reading this want a unicycle or pink bunny at your wedding, I totally dig it and have experience with such things (Put THAT on my resume)!
For this shoot, we didn’t go totally out there. Our stylist brought out some spring styles, coupled with some dramatic hair and makeup from some talented ladies and dropped it all in a cool location. Kristin Rogers, Logan Cole and I spent the day discovering, experimenting and shooting some fabulous models.
