the places: washington d.c.

I’m a pouter, a  bit petulant and have been known to sulk on occasion. I see no wrong in stomping my feet with my lower lip protruding, injecting just a bit of whine onto my voice all in the attempt to get my way.

When I knew I was going to Virginia to shoot a wedding, I started hinting to my friend that I wanted to go to “the City” and explore. I had never been to the country’s capital and was dying to see it. Little known fact, I love history. I don’t retain most of it, but I enjoy hearing about it and seeing the richness of what made our world what it is today.

My friend hemmed and hawed for a while and then told me, “Well, since it’s the day after the wedding, we are all going to be really wrecked.”

My bottom lip made it’s appearance.

“Um, maybe. I’ll talk to the others.”

My arms crossed in front of me.

“Okay, okay. If worse comes to worst, I’ll take you to the Metro and you can go exploring by yourself.

“Fine,” I said, “But if I get mugged or kidnapped, you’ll feel guilty for the rest of your life.”

In the end, I got my way…as I always do (wink, wink) and the whole group ended up on a grand tour of the historic sites Washington DC had to offer.

Here’s the group:

You could not tell that it had rained ALL DAY the day before. The clouds were amazing. This image was straight out of camera.

I took this picture for my daughter who loves American Flags. It is outside of the Holocaust Museum where the shooting occurred on Wednesday of this week. My heart goes out to the family of the guard who was killed.

We were actually visiting on D-Day. It was emotional and very moving. Traveling with military and government workers, the moment was especially poignant when at the sound of The Star Spangled Banner, I sensed stillness all around me. My companions were standing at attention, facing the flag. It was a beautiful moment that still brings tears to my eyes.

I love DC! I have friends there and have gone back several times. It’s so pretty and clean and a little too perfect. But it’s awesome to photograph because everything looks pictureesque!! Great job on the photos and hope you had fun!

Wow Hanssie! Beautiful images of such a wonderful city. I love all of them and one of my favorite is the “Freedom is not free” image. I have the same one and it reminds me of the price all of the men and woman paid for our freedoms in this country.
